Mobile-Terminated SMS

MT SMS

A message delivered to a handset.

Plain-language definition

A message delivered to a handset.

Technical definition

MT SMS is delivered by the SMSC after an SRI-SM query to the HLR returns the serving MSC or SGSN; the SMSC sends MAP MT-ForwardSM to that node, which pages and delivers to the UE.

Why it matters

MT delivery is where home routing, store-and-forward and firewall screening of inbound traffic take place.
