Short Message Service Centre

SMSC

The network element that stores, routes and delivers SMS.

Plain-language definition

The network element that stores, routes and delivers SMS.

Technical definition

An SMSC terminates MAP SMS operations (MO-ForwardSM, MT-ForwardSM, SRI-SM, AlertSC, ReportSM-DeliveryStatus), stores messages for unreachable subscribers, schedules retries and exposes SMPP/HTTP to applications. Guardivia Operator SMSC is a software-only implementation.

Why it matters

The SMSC is the anchor of operator messaging; owning it means owning routing, CDRs and enterprise connectivity.
